Adam and I took an impromptu trip to Homer and went out on a King Salmon fishing charter with Captain Shane and Driftwood Charters. Shane has a reputation for being a hardworking charter captain – he’ll fish up to three tides (depending on the time frame) and do his best to make sure his guests catch something, and even better, limit out.
Captain Shane and his co-captain, Jim, kept us out for 13 hours, trawling the mouth of Kachemak Bay and Bear Cove (further in the bay). It was slow fishing, and some days it’s going to be that way, but Shane didn’t throw in the towel. So after the first couple hours didn’t turn up anything, he gave us the option to call it or refill the tank and go to a couple other spots he had in mind. Our entire boat opted to keep at it, because with bluebird skies, why go in? And lucky us, 5 out of 6 ended up catching some nice size King Salmon!
It was the first time Adam or I have ever caught Kings, and we ended up with some nice size fish. Fish on, summer is almost here!
