Am I doing this backwards?

My memories of ski club, ski vacations from younger days on the east coast are fuzzy at best. I vaguely remember Killington, Blue Mountain, one or two others…

The point is, I wasn’t drawn to the ski mountains.

When we moved to Alaska and Adam got into backcountry skiing and our friends started going out too, I felt left out and I’ll be damned if my friends have all the fun.

So I started backcountry skiing too, telemark style to be specific, with absolutely no downhill or tele skills under my belt. 4 winters and counting: it’s been great.

And then I found myself on Alyeska, working on my downhill turns and laughing to myself that I must be doing this backwards. Don’t most people learn downhill, then backcountry?
