Marathons 2016: Weeks 4-6

Damn, we are flying through this training program! Another Saturday, another long run down.

During Weeks 4-5, I was fully immersed in the 21 Day Sugar Detox. Early on, there were a handful of really sluggish runs. They were a little demoralizing, but more so they were lightbulb moments for personal nutrition and training strength. After some crucial tweaks to my diet (I discovered the microwaved sweet potato), I found a really strong stride. Two highlights: ~9:50min/mile for 10 miles and ~9:13min/mile for 4.5.

Of course, Mama said there’d be days like this… And Week 6 was one of them. The 21DSD wrapped and as they say, “I came in like a wrecking ball” to alcohol, fettuccini, Cadbury eggs, Almond Joy, spinach dip, brownie brittle, pizza (x2 nights), cupcakes, bread, garlic bread, crackers, Nestle cookie dough and flour tortillas with generally 21DSD compliant fajita fixings.

The effect of the complete 180 was a shock to my system: gluten gut, poor sleep, increased stress… Layer that with new job/routine changes and PMS… Week 6 was a mess.

But! Today’s long run helped shake off the cobwebs. Stacia & I met on the trail and hammered out 11 miles in a 10:28 min/mile pace – race pace! If we can keep that up…. 4:30 marathon time is in the bag.
