Marathon Training 2016: Do Not Play Until Mile 20

Marathon training kicks off 2/29 and it’s time to build that ever important playlist.

I don’t listen to a ton of music when running. Not only for general safety & awareness of my surroundings, but back in 2012/2013 I nearly collided with a moose when running with earbuds in. So I save music for the second half of long runs, when I’m starting to feel tired and need that oomph.

Here’s what I have on my “do not play until mile 20” playlist:

Led Zeppelin (Immigrant Song)

Icona Pop (I Love It)

Cascada (Evacuate the Dancefloor)

And that’s it. It’s going to be a long 26.2 miles.

What are your recommendations? And can someone teach me how to use Spotify?

  2. Years ago I shorted out one of my earbuds from sweat getting into it on a long training run. That turned out to be the happiest accident of all time for me, because I kept using it with only one earbud in waiting for the day when I would buy a new set. I never did buy a new set because I realized that running with only one earbud in is the safest thing in the world and years later now I wouldn’t even consider running with both earbuds in. Try it, you’ll see what I mean . . . you can crank the one side enough to enjoy the music, while the other side is never completely blocked out to the ambient sounds around you. You can hear cars around you, you can tell what’s going on around you in a race, you could stop and have a conversation with someone and never take the playing earbud out. Let the music play!!
